Traditionally the university of applied science and business at Furtwangen - Black Forrest / Germany - has its roots in the clock industry. Within the recent decades the requirements of industry and economy changed. The traditional faculties lost weight and new faculties, esp. in the area of computer science, gained influence. Today the university offers a wide spectrum of topical faculties like digital media or computer networking. But also the "old" faculties general computer science and computer science in ecomonmics seem to be more popular than ever before. Every semester there are more applications than university places. Due to the current employment situation and the university's excellent reputation student who have finished their course are in demand.

This faculty is a common one. The university at Furtwangen is of course not the only one offering this course. But it has been the first one offering it. Always looking at the job market and its requirements the faculty attaches importance to the actual technologies. Java™ and object oriented design are only two examples out of many. But computer science in economics isn't only computer science. Especially the application in economy stands in the foreground. The curriculum is completed through a series of social trainings. Leader seminars, presentation & moderation are just two further examples again. This short overview over the faculty already shows that these students aren't specialists. The aim is to educate generalists that have an overview over the complex world of today's enterprises, able to lead projects and to do management tasks.

Furtwangen is a small city in the Black Forrest (Southwest Germany). The landscape is marvellous, but the city itself is quite boring. The nearest bigger  city is Freiburg about an hour by car. The cultural offerings are limited. The best events are the parties at the university. If you are a wintersports freak you will be happy. The "Feldberg", the highest mountain of the Black Forrest, isn't far away. There you normally have very good conditions for alpine wintersports. For extreme bikers the mountains of the Black Forrest are a wonderful training area, too. But for everyone who likes sunny weather and warm temperature, Furtwangen is the last place you should go to. The summer semester here is called 2nd winter semester. And sometimes it's true.

»    Galway,        Ireland

Galway  is Ireland's fourth largest city with a population of  64000 people (2001). During my second internship I worked there for three month at the foreign office of the German enterprise "baeurer AG". I had a good time there enjoying the beautiful landscape like the Aran Islands or the rough Connemara. The Irish people are usually very nice and hospitable even if you don't like Guiness beer. Besides I hopefully improved my English. At least I now know why Ireland is called the "Green Island". If you ever have a possibility to go there to spend some free days - do it; you'll surely like the countryside.
